You Were Just Lucky

How much of your life was really up to you?

Cover of You Were Just Lucky by Antonio Carlos

Your effort was real. But it never acted alone.

Tell someone they succeeded because they worked hard and there will rarely be a disagreement. Add one word — luck — and the reaction changes. This book begins with that discomfort to explore why we accept explanations that place us at the center of success, yet resist when something beyond our control enters the story.

The book does not reduce achievements to coincidences or deny individual responsibility. It shows that no one chose their own beginning, the body they received, their era, every person they met, or the conditions that amplified each decision. Merit remains; it only loses its claim to explain an entire life.

You may have been decisive without having been sufficient.

The book’s questions

Who is this “I” that chooses? Why does the outcome seem to prove who we are? How much of an achievement belongs to individual action — and how much depended on a world already in motion? The journey ends with our smallness: not as insignificance, but as a realistic measure of human participation.
